Classic Car Insurance Frequently Asked Questions

Getting classic car insurance right can take slightly more time than for the family saloon but it’s important to get the right cover for two main reasons :-

  1. There are many significant discounts available for classics, and
  2. If you have to make a claim you want to be sure your vehicle will be fully covered for all eventualities.

Premium Choice is a specialist in this area, having helped classic car owners for many years.  If you haven’t already read them you should start with our general pages on Classic Car Insurance, Imported Cars, American Classics, or Young Driver Classics, as appropriate.

What would you define as a ‘classic’, ‘vintage’, ‘veteran’, ‘collectible’, ‘rare’, or ‘cherished’ car?

This varies from insurer to insurer.  For the most part a car becomes a classic when it is over 20 years old.   As for the other categories, this is down to the individual circumstances.   However, here are some generally accepted guidelines :
  • Veterans are those rare cars manufactured before 1903
  • Vintage cars are normally defined as being manufactured between 1903 and 1933
  • Classics are those which are at least 20 years old
Collectibles, rare and cherished cars are terms used by owners but which have no specific category to insurers.  Subject to usage, these types of cars are generally rated in a similar way to classics. You might want to read our ‘Rare and unlisted insurance’ page about these vehicles.

Can I insure my classic car with a mass market insurer?

Very unlikely as they rarely possess the expertise or enthusiasm to insure this type of vehicle.  Classic cars require policies tailored to the unique circumstances for an older vehicle.  This delivers lower premiums and some critical ‘extras’ which almost all owners need.

Can I insure my classic with you and my everyday car(s) with another company?

Yes, but we also offer multi-car policies which offer substantial savings.

Does my policy cover me to drive other cars?

Please check your certificate of insurance, but most classic policies exclude driving other cars.
