What is meant by ‘4x4 off road’ and ‘green-laning’?

These terms are used in many different ways.  A four wheel drive vehicle clearly has the capability to drive away from ordinary roads, so it can rightly be called an ‘off road vehicle’.  In reality many people drive 4x4s and never use them for off roading.   In common parlance off-roading and green-laning refer to the use of a 4x4 over land or on tracks which are not part of the public highway.

Am I covered for off roading? If you have selected one of our ‘off road policies’

You will be covered for club-arranged off road open days or club-arranged green lane events, on the insurance policies we offer. This activity is specifically excluded on a standard everyday car policy.

Do I still have to have special insurance for my 4x4 if I also use it for ordinary journeys and occasionally drive off road?

Yes.

Do I need a licence to drive ‘off road’?

If you are not on public land then you do not need a licence, but you do need permission.  If your off-road activity is part of a motor sport event, you may need a competition licence – for some events there are further requirements such as medical tests, special insurance requirements, etc.

How old do I need to be to drive ‘off road’?

Provided you are not driving in a public place, there is no limit on age.

Can I drive on a footpath, bridleway and restricted byway if the landowner gives me ‘lawful authority’?

Yes, that is the legal term which covers permission under section 34 of the Road Traffic Act 1988.  However, you should consider whether vehicular use of the way might amount to a public nuisance.  Both you, and your vehicle, should be road legal for all public roads, even if your use involves only a short section of footpath.

What else do I need to know about using my 4x4 off-road?

Once again we must stress that the use of your 4x4 vehicle has to comply with the law and it is your sole responsibility to ensure that you do so.
When it comes to being insured, we will provide a policy which includes the uses we have agreed to cover.  You should read this document carefully and if you are in any doubt then please contact us for assistance.

Does my policy cover me to drive other cars?

Please check your certificate of insurance if you are an existing customer.  If you are a new customer then you should be aware that most 4x4 policies exclude driving other cars unless otherwise agreed.
At Premium Choice we have a variety of options for our customers, including multi-vehicle policies.

How old does a vehicle have to be for a 4 x 4 insurance policy?

For everyday 4X4 vehicles no age restriction applies but for offroading
We can only quote on 4x4 vehicles which are over 5 years old.
